Le monastère de Schéchen
(zhe-chen) fut fondé en 1735 dans la région du Kham à l'est
du Tibet. Il devint rapidement l'un de six principaux monastères de l'ordre
des Nyingmapas, dit des "Anciens", lequel représente la forme
originale du bouddhisme tel qu'il fut introduit au Tibet… A la suite de
l'invasion communiste chinoise du Tibet, plus de 6000 monastères et bibliothèques
furent détruits. L'un des plus éminents représentant du
bouddhisme tibétain, Dilgo Khyentsé Rinpotché (1910-1991),
décida de construire une filiale du monastère de Shéchen
au Népal afin de préserver les traditions spirituelles et artistiques
qui avaient fait la renommée du monastère mère... La tradition
musicale de Shéchen est fondée sur celle du monastère de
Mindroling (smin-grol-gling), au Tibet Central, l'un des plus purs dépositaires
de la lignée Nyingmapa.

Shechen Monastery (zhe-chen) was founded in 1735 in the province of Kham in
Eastern Tibet. It rapidly became one of the six princiapal monasteries of the
Nyingma, or "Ancient", tradition, which maintains the form of Bouddhism
originally introduced into Tibet… Following the Chinese communist invasion
of Tibet, more than six thousand monasteries and librairies were completely
destroyed. One of the formost Tibetan Buddhist teachers, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche
(1910-1991), decided to build a branch of Shechen monastery in the Kathmandu
valley of Nepal, in order to maintain the spiritual and artistic traditions
for which the monastry had been so famous… Shechen's musicl tradition is
based on that of the monastery of Mindroling (smin-grol-gling) in Central Tibet,
which upheld the Nyingma lineage in one of its purest forms.

of 12 prayers, rituals or offering chants as well as instrumental pieces for
trumpets and oboes. The detailed sleeve notes written by Mireille Helffer and
Matthieu Ricard explain the meaning of the chants and describe the various instruments.
